Certificate: Dr. Walther Bernt („an indisputable, characteristic, and excellently preserved work by the Flemish portraitist and genre painter Gonzales Coques...“). Gonzales Coques was a court painter and also worked for wealthy patricians in Antwerp. He was first and foremost a portraitist, the costumes and postures of his sitters being imbued with courtly elegance. Occasionally he also painted smaller-sized solitary figures invested with an allegorical meaning.
